Third Faculty of Medicine, Charles University

The Third Faculty of Medicine offers a 6 year, full time study program for GENERAL MEDICINE for an M.D. Degree (MUDr.=Medicinae Universae Doctor)

The Faculty is in the beautiful Vinohrady District of Prague. Its intake of just 60 students each year ensures small classes and individual attention. The atmosphere is friendly and the tutors know their students by name. Any problems of each individual student are dealt with in a confidential manner. The Faculty's newly refurbished building offers a modern and pleasant environment for quiet study.

The programme of study at Third Faculty is based on PBL (Problem Based Learning) and incorporates the latest trends in medicine and medical education and is close to programmes at progressive medical faculties in Western Europe and the USA. Students are in contact with patients right from the beginning.

The Faculty is meeting the new demands of modern medicine on doctors by the curriculum of Medicine which stresses the significance of understanding how organ systems work, as well as understanding how medical systems work. The curriculum is designed with an aim of teaching in context and integrates individual subjects into larger, more meaningful modules. This helps students to learn in a way relevant to medical practice: in context of the functioning of the body as a whole. Emphasis is also put on medical ethics, communication with patients and legal aspects of the medical profession as well as integrating a developed area of preventive subjects. The Faculty also offers many practical courses that are not taught at other faculties. Among the popular courses you will find Communication with Patients, where actors simulate a variety of patient types. Practical courses in the field of urgent care, including areas such as high altitude medicine, endoscopy and psychotherapy are also offered.

From the very first year students may participate in high quality research projects and learn from graduates of Cambridge or Sorbonne

Universities.

Student visits abroad are becoming an indelible part of instruction at the Faculty. Participation in international scientific and research programmes and lectures by foreign specialists enable the Faculty to spread its wings and establish new mutually beneficial scientific fellowships. This facilitates improvements in the quality of teaching material, studies of new methods, procedures, and approaches, thus creating technical conditions indispensable for achieving a higher level of education.

The teaching basis of Third Faculty of Medicine includes the Faculty Hospital Královské Vinohrady, Psychiatric Centre Praha, Hospital Na Bulovce, Thomayer Hospital, Institute for Mother and Child Care, Hospital Na Homolce, Central Military Hospital and The National Institute of Public Health. Prominent experts of the Czech Academy of Sciences and Institute of Clinical and Experimental Medicine also participate in the teaching.

The co–operation among individual faculties of Charles University, in particular Faculties of Medicine, is on the rise. The University supports healthy competition in sport activities among faculties, and students also take part in various social and cultural events not only in this country but abroad.
